Negative keywords are one of the least glamorous parts of Google Ads, and one of the easiest ways to protect a meal prep budget. Search behavior around 'meal prep' is messy. People may be looking for recipes, containers, jobs, grocery plans, bodybuilding advice, or free PDFs. If the account never reviews search terms, you can spend real money learning that lesson.

Do not blindly copy a giant negative list
A negative that is correct for one meal prep business may be wrong for another. For example, 'vegan' is irrelevant if you do not offer vegan meals, but it could be a valuable buyer term for a plant-based service. Build negatives around the actual menu and offer.
Watch education intent
Searches like 'how to meal prep' or 'meal prep ideas' are usually informational. They may be useful for SEO content, but they are rarely where I would spend a limited Google Ads budget. Paid search should focus on the customer who is trying to buy, not the person trying to learn how to cook on Sunday.
Watch location mismatch
You may see searches containing cities you do not serve. Those can become negatives, but first check the campaign's location settings. Fixing the geographic setup is more important than trying to solve a targeting problem with hundreds of city negatives.
Create a weekly search-term habit
During the early campaign period, review search terms frequently. I like to classify them into three buckets: clearly relevant, clearly irrelevant, and 'watch.' This keeps you from blocking a term after one ambiguous click while still cleaning obvious waste quickly.
Negatives should improve the account over time
A mature negative list is built from real behavior. It tells the story of what the business does not sell and who it does not serve. Combined with focused keywords and clean conversion tracking, that makes the account easier to scale. Read our Google Ads guide.
