SMS can be one of the most useful channels in a weekly meal business because timing matters. It can also become the fastest way to annoy customers if every message is a promotion. I treat text messaging like a high-priority channel: fewer messages, clearer reasons, better timing.
The weekly menu reminder earns its place
If the menu changes weekly, a concise text when ordering opens can be genuinely useful. Keep the message simple: what is new, when ordering closes, and one direct link.
Cutoff reminders should be selective
Do not text every customer every cutoff if they have already ordered. Use purchase behavior where possible so the reminder reaches people who still have a decision to make.
Use SMS for operational clarity too
Delivery updates, pickup reminders, or important service changes can make the channel more valuable than a stream of discounts. When customers trust the channel, they are more likely to pay attention when a promotional message actually matters.
What I would avoid
- Daily promotional texts
- Fake urgency
- Messages with no clear sender identity
- Long paragraphs
- Sending the same campaign to customers who already ordered
Consent and compliance are not optional
Only text customers who have properly opted in, clearly explain what they are signing up for, and provide a simple opt-out path. Your SMS platform and legal counsel should guide the exact compliance requirements for your business and location.
Keep the message human
A text should sound like a useful note from the brand, not a mini email squeezed into 160 characters. One idea, one link, one reason to act.
Measure orders, not clicks alone
Track how many orders a campaign creates, whether customers unsubscribe, and whether SMS is helping existing customers reorder rather than only creating short spikes. See our retention service.
